4. Speed Cameras Are Money-making Machines
The argument is frequently put that speed cameras are placed in specific positions to catch as many people as possible and make as much money as possible for the government of the day. It's often suggested that by doing so the police are not focussing on road safety or on solving crimes.
Wouldn't it be good, just for once, to see the following points receiving as much public attention:
- If you don't speed you don't get caught
- It's only speeding drivers who contribute to the government's coffers
- Road safety involves people obeying the road rules
- Speed camera operators are not police who would otherwise be engaged in solving crimes
- The money contributed by speeding drivers reduces the demand on other taxes
- Those who shout loudest are frequently the ones who are paying most
- Drivers who persistently break the road rules (including speeding) should contribute more to hospital, ambulance and trauma counselling costs than those who don't
